Just got married: How do I change my name in Nigerian bank accounts – FINANCENGR. Name change will always be a reoccurring decimal so long people (ladies) are willing to get married to the love of their lives. There are other reasons which could prompt me to change my name if I so wish, however all these would be covered in this article.
In recent times, ladies who got newly married embark on this as tradition and culture demands that a wife whose bride price and other marriage rights had been fulfilled automatically bears her husband’s name. Categorically, she will change her own surname to accommodate the husband’s surname especially in this part of the world (Ngeria).
What are the requirements to change my name in Nigerian bank account?
The following are the required documents you will have to present while trying to effect name change in your Nigerian bank account.
- Court affidavit.
- Marriage certificate which should bear your new name.
- Customer information update form/ the bank will make provision for this.
- News Paper publication containing your preferred new name.
- Application letter by you, instructing the bank on how you wish to be addressed going forward.
Explanation of terms:
Court affidavit: This is a letter of authority from a court of competent jurisdiction affirming its legal backing and awareness that a certain position had, will or should take effect, as well should be granted every necessary hearing or assistance depending on the event under review as guaranteed by the order of the court.
A court affidavit should contain the passport photograph of the applicant duly stamped across as most banks will require, signed and stamped.
Marriage certificate: This is a certificate issued by the court of law as an order which legally approves and reorganizes your marriage. Every marriage should have this certificate ideally.
Customer information update form: This form is being made provision for by the bank, to collect your most recent information as may be required to update your details. Contained in this form are : Account name, account number, title, surname, other names, mobile number, e-mail address, marital status, residential address, city, country, state, religion, employment status, business employers address, next of kin, phone number, customer signature and date.
News Paper Publication containing preferred name: This is a national publication where you might have published your intended “ change my name ” for the world to see and take note going forward.
Application letter by you: This is otherwise referred to as customer’s instruction. Before an update could be effected in your account, there must be an instruction clearly written and signed by you. The bank receive and act on it, then file in your archive for future reference. This letter should contain your account name and account number as well.

As simple as that, it does not involve rocket science to achieve this.
Some persons may like to contest why didn’t I add an ID card to this process. The point is this, once a customer meets the demand for affidavit and publication on a national daily, the inclusion of an ID card is invalid.
If you demand a customer to provide an ID card, a clause that the IDs MUST CONTAIN the intended name he/she will like to change to is attached, which is not necessary. The reason is this, if the customer has let’s say a driver’s license that has not expired or international passport yet to expire, will you ask him/her to get another driver’s license or international passport with the exact supposed name? The answer is no. Therefore inclusion of ID card is ruled out.
On receipt of these documents the bank is expected to change my name preferably to me within 24hrs. The process listed above applies to both sex.
These are customers who do not stay in Nigeria, but stay abroad and really want to effect name change on their bank accounts for whatever reason, no problem. You are required to provide the following
- Write a letter to the bank via e-mail on your account mandate, communicating your intention to change your name. You can easily contact your bank via their website online, do search on your preferred bank and continue from there.
- Do a newspaper publication on your preferred name change.
- You will need to send a scanned copy of court affidavit if you are not changing your name for the purpose of marriage.
- Send your marriage certificate if the name change is for the purpose of marriage. If it’s not for marriage affidavit will do. (Scanned copy)
- The bank will send you a customer information update via e-mail (Scanned copy). Thereafter your name change will be effected.
Note: The E-mail address must be the one in your account mandate.
